Special Competition for the Host Club

Maximizing Event Integrity

Each model in this Category was built and entered by a member of the host club, the Cactus Car Modelers Club of Phoenix.

Ours is a critically judged model car championship. The judging team comes from the ranks of our club.  It is our long-standing tradition -- and commitment to our guests -- that we will not put them in the position of competing against our members, the judges.

This category allows our members a chance to display their builds and also compete in dsc
V16 without risk of compromising the Event's integrity.

Each dsc
V16 Entrant receives a judging sheet for this Category and is encouraged to "Judge the Judges."

McDonalds / Larry Minor Top Fuel Dragster

Note:

  • This is an excellent replica of the Ed "The Ace" McCulloch-driver McDonalds Top Fuel dragster, owned by Larry Minor, in 1991-92.
  • This model was built completely out of the box; the only addition was the custom base, showing an area of asphalt and single strip.
  • I don't normally build dragsters, but decided to break out of my regular topics. The kit was challenging due to it's length and warpage, but the completed car came out very nice. It's a pleasing addition to my shelf, really standing out from my normal builds.

1/12 Barry Sheene World Champion Grand Prix Motorcycle

Note:

  • This is an exploded shot of English World GP Champion Barry Sheene just about to push start his bike.
  • This model was built completely out of the box; the only addition was the custom base, showing an area of the tarmac and single strip.
  • Sheene was one of the world's great motorcycle road racers; I met him once. He rode both Suzukis & Yamahas, this is his triple cylinder Yamaha. The kit was built with the bodywork 'exploded' off the bike; otherwise, none of the details of the bike itself would be visible, as on the real one.

1967 Oldsmobile Toronado Pikes Peak Hill Climb Racer

Note:

  • Replication of Nick Sanborn's 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado Pikes Peak Special, a factory-backed race car that ultimately won the event. I had particular interest in this vehicle as Sanborn was a friend of mine years later.
  • Engine is an Olds 455 cu in V8; car has front-wheel drive. Interior was gutted as per the 1:1. Dashboard modified to match the 1:1, gauge decals, seat from parts box, roll cage fabricated from sprue, seatbelt added, along with transmission selector.
  • Exterior painted to match 1:1 scheme, including aluminum-painted bumpers to match the actual car's fiberglass units; custom decals created on computer in addition to some contingency decals sourced from various sheets.

1/12 Honda CR450 Motocross bike, Chuck Sun, rider

Note:

  • This is a model of former US MX 50cc National Champion Chuck Sun, on a CR450R,
  • Model was built out of the box; the only addition was the custom base, showing a track corner (real dirt from my roommate's back yard!)
  • Chuck Sun won the US National MX 500cc Championship in 1980. The model was built with him in mind; lettering on the back & all trim is hand painted. That's real dirt on his boots, pants & jersey. Even his eyebrows and eyes are painted. Chuck is coming into a gradual left hand turn ready to gas it!

PT Ute Chrysler PT Cruiser made into Austrailian-style pick-up

Note:

  • Rear portion of roof and upper sides removed; new cab back fabricated and molded in; bed fabricated from sheet stock; made to look as though it was a mildly customized 'Day Two' version of a factory PT-amino type vehicle. Custom wheels and tires from the Black Force kit.
  • Interior trimmed in color-keyed paint, smoked windows and sunroof (exposed 35mm film), blue-dot taillights, textured bedliner, real wood slats cut and stained for bed floor.
  • Paint applied by rattle cans. Fading lames masked and sprayed over red oxide primer, then pearl clear shot over entire vehicle. Color experiment - I call it Pearl Brick.

1970 Ford Custom Arizona Highway Patrol Cruiser

Note:

  • Built mostly box stock with paint-detailed undercarriage, engine, engine compartment, and wheels. Period radio control head and siren/PA control head fabricated and detail painted, microphone cord handmade from fine wire coiled around a shirt pin shaft and painted.
  • Light bar period correct for AHP - they actually ran with an amber beacon on the right side! Light bar mounted correctly to rain gutters; whip antenna fabricated from guitar string wire to scale length (yeah, it looks really long . . . ); aftermarket vintage AHP decals obtained from a limited run.
  • Proud moment: a retired AHP Officer saw the model, studied it, and pronounced it 'dead-on accurate' to one he drove early in his career.

2006 Dodge Magnum AZ DPS Highway Patrol Tribute Cruiser

Note:

  • About the time the Revell Magnum kit came out, Arizona was experimenting with possible new marking schemes for its Highway Patrol Cars. Proposals were invited. This model was inspired by that quest, using the basics of the modern era all-white cars and the early era copper colored cars.
  • Interior was populated with a radio/siren control head stack mounted to the floor, a shotgun with rack, and a laptop with screen details. Light bar and push bumper were also parts box sourced.  Custom decals rounded out the cosmetics, along with a handmade antenna from guitar string.
  • Sadly, my hypothetical scheme never saw the light of day on the 1:1 cruisers, but it was fun to come up with what seemed to be a more artistic cop car.
