1/8 1962 Kaiser Aluminum AAA (USAC) Champ Dirt Car

  • Roger Ward was the driver and he won the Indy 500 in 1959 and 1962, was the National Champion in those years. In the six times he raced at Indy he never finished less than 4th.

Dan Baker

2006 Dodge Magnum Baker County Sheriff Patrol Cruiser

Note:

  • There is a Baker County in Florida. This model combined their new marking scheme (used on white cars) with Inca Gold metallic paint for what I thought was a more striking look.  Parts box light bar and push bar, detailed. The grilles were hogged out and fine mesh installed.
  • Interior was populated with a radio/siren control head stack mounted to the floor, a shotgun with rack, and a laptop with screen details. Microphone wired with coiled cord. Handmade antennas from guitar strings, including a LoJack array.
  • Otherwise, ordinary paint, finish, and detailing is what's there.  This model surprised me with a Club Monthly Theme win and a Model of the Year award! Either nobody else showed up, or maybe it was all in the details . . .  Otherwise, ordinary paint, finish, and detailing is what's there.  This model surprised me with a Club Monthly Theme win and a Model of the Year award! Studebaker SuperStarliner streamline dragster

Note:

  • I had never built a dragster. A friend (dragster freak) constantly nagged me to build a dragster. I thought about it. Then I discovered this Jimmy Flintstone body. A Studebaker! Model born! Built and fully detailed the Tom McEwen dragster chassis and engine. Fully detailed! Look for the chute tags.
  • The body was rough and required a lot - A LOT - of shaping, fitting, cutting, dremelling, sanding, filling, sanding, priming (and did I mention sanding?). Rattle can paint reflecting the AZ State Flag. Lots of individual decals and some computer made decals. Okay! Darn it, I built a dragster!
  • I had a great time surprising my naggy friend with my first dragster. I was surprised, too. It won top honors in all three of my clubs (Model of Year) and Peoples Choice awards at Desert Scale Classic and Goodguys Scottsdale. I can't build another - can't top this. Yes, it was fun!   .

Scale correct whip and AM radio antennas handmade from guitar string and resin bases. Rattle can paint and decals from various sources.

  • "Rescue 8" was a 1950's TV show of the exploits of a two-man rescue squad. The show ran a couple of seasons and inspired not only a very young me, but also its successor, "Emergency!"  This model was created from fond memories of "Rescue 8," but before internet search tools became available.

Dan Baker

1937 Ford Custom Fastback Coupe

Note:

  • The AMT Black Force snap kit was the basis for this model. The iconic wheels and tires from the kit were swapped out with these Aluma Coupe units.  The window configuration was reshaped to more of a hardtop design. The body was dropped to the pavement by sectioning a chunk off the rockers.
  • My main purpose for this model was to experiment with flames and flip-flop paint. Oh, and still in the rattle-can media.  Krylon charcoal metalflake was the base color and hand-masked flames were shot with Krylon's color-changing paint (green and purple). There's no clear, but it's polished.
  • Well, I found it can be done. But I usually don't build street rods, customs, or other canvasses for custom paint, so this ended up being more of a diversion than a venture into new genres.  Even so, it's in Display Only as a result of stealing a DSC Best Paint Award from the airbrush crowd!
